The Dallas Rules

Dear Reader

I’ve collected these nuggets of wisdom very selectively since July, 1993 when I began my career in the political minefield of information technology. The criteria is simple. The rule must be indisputable and funny. Some are original but most are not. Regardless of where they came from I beg you – Use these for good and not evil. If you find that you are not more successful after learning the rules, remember that this advice is probably worth what you paid for it.

1. Suck up to everybody because you never know who you’ll be working for next week.
2. Intelligent Unintelligibility is key to communicating like a leader.
3. It’s not what you do but what you look like you do that counts.
4. Fashion should be a statement not a question.
5. People are like cattle, they are driven by noise and motion.
6. Patience is a virtue and ignorance is bliss. That means you can have a good life if you’re stupid and don’t mind waiting around.
7. No matter what it is, just shut up and do it.
8. Between longevity and skill , longevity wins every time.
9. Ignorance is curable but stupidity is fatal.
10. People rise to the level of expectation but sink to the level of accountability.
11. Never interrupt an enemy in the middle of a mistake.
12. If at first you don’t succeed, redefine success.
13. The difference between a vision and a hallucination is the credibility of the person who sees it.
14. Indecision is the key to flexibility.
15. Creating problems you can solve will enhance your reputation as a miracle worker.
16. Never identify a problem you are not willing to own.
